The Ancient 2,000 yr Old
Totara Experience
Hike to an Ancient 2,000 year old Tōtara Tree
3–4 Hours | Morning or Afternoon Departure
Some places are simply unforgettable.
Hidden deep within the native forest stands one of Kaikōura's most remarkable treasures—a magnificent tōtara tree estimated to be over 2,000 years old. Standing beneath its towering branches is a humbling experience, offering a rare chance to connect with one of New Zealand's oldest living giants.
Our journey takes us through beautiful native bush alive with the songs of korimako (bellbirds) and pīwakawaka (fantails). Along the way, your local guide will share fascinating stories of the region, Māori legends, and the special relationship between the people, the forest, and the land. You'll discover the unique plants, birds, and natural history that make this corner of Kaikōura so extraordinary.
This isn't simply a walk—it's an opportunity to slow down, immerse yourself in nature, and experience a place that very few visitors ever see.
